Gearing up for the New Year

At this time of year, many people are gearing down from other activities as they prepare for the holidays. “I will get back on track in the new year” is a common phrase used by many. Yet the holiday season can provide excellent opportunities for networking as we attend events where we may not have seen people for a very long time. This gives us the opportunity to have a conversation in a more relaxed setting.

While the Christmas season is not an ideal time to be able to access hiring managers, there are many things you can do to sustain your momentum.

  • Continue to view job postings, revise your resume accordingly and apply for suitable positions.
  • Give your LinkedIn account a makeover, ensuring that your skills, job interests, background summary and Call to Action are current.
  • Take your references out for a coffee to retain contact.
  • Make a list of employers you would like to cold call in the new year and refine your script.
  • Follow the social media posts channels of your local employment agencies for tips and events.
  • Take some time over the holidays to regroup, recharge and reconnect. This is a great time to hand out networking cards.
  • Read interesting articles related to your field.
  • Set specific short-term and long-term goals related to job search, retraining or community involvement for the upcoming year.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Be mindful of what you are sharing online to ensure you have a positive digital footprint.
  • Make a list of your accomplishments in the past year.
  • Retain some type of schedule during the holidays regarding eating, sleeping and job search.
  • Utilize social events as a networking opportunity.
  • Talk to friends and family to let them know what you are looking for.
  • Chill out and enjoy the holidays. Spent quality time with friends and family.
  • Leisure time and relationships help provide balance, perspective, motivation and relaxation.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.  We look forward to helping you meet your goals in 2020!
